Happy Halloween!

October 15, 2012

Halloween tends to inspire more creativity than almost any other time of year. Whether you’re a child or an adult, there’s a fantastic, theatrical element to Halloween that everyone goes crazy for. Dressing up, whether it’s your house, your costume or even your food, extends to pretty much everything at this time of year.  Here we offer some great ideas for Halloween around BC. And we invite YOU to share yours with us here.

Things to do:

If you’re in the Lower Mainland and surrounding areas, the best resource to check for everything Halloween- from haunted houses to train rides, pumpkin patches and spooky carnivals—is the uber popular yoymama. This resource, updated frequently, includes all the events, festivals and activities happening everywhere from Chilliwack to Tri-Cities to East Van.

Fun at Pumpkin Patch in Okanagan

If you’re in the Okanagan, you’ll love this! We reached out to the folks at Okanagan 4 Kids and discovered their guide to exploring the best Haunts of the Okanagan Valley

And speaking of neighborhoods to explore. Every town has one: That street that goes absolutely crazy with lawn graveyards, lights, and spooky special effects. (This is when you can tell who’s working in the movie industry.) There’s Trinity Street in Vancouver, Starlight Street in Coquitlam, and the whole Kettle Valley in the Okanagan. Tell us the best street in your hood by joining this conversation on FB here.

Treats to Eat:

In our hunt for the most fabulously decorated desserts, we came across this incredible site aptly named Craft Passion, where food becomes a true craft. The Tombstone Cookies are top on our list of treats to make with our little helpers!

Last year, Yoyomama shared this cute recipe for Frankenstein cupcakes. (The first image is the professional one, the second is her own creation) and the fabulous duo from Lunchalicious in Victoria shared the showstopping Cat Skeleton, both of which are worth repeating this year!

Now, if you’re one of those parents who worries about too much sugar and secretly hopes their child gets a basket full of toothbrushes and pencils, you’re not alone. However, if you look on the bright side, Halloween provides an opportunity to teach kids about moderation. Ellyn Satter tells parents that kids who are deprived often end up going overboard with candy when they have an opportunity, so in many ways moderation really is an important lesson to learn. You can read her advice here.
